Eye Lids and BOTOX® What is Essential Blepharospasm? It is a progressive, involuntary contraction of the entire orbicularis muscle and the procerus and conrugate muscles. The involuntary spasm of the eyelids cause functional blindness and will limit the patients ability to drive , read and general activities. What is BOTOX®? BOTOX® represents the best treatment already available for blepharospasm and hemi facial spasm. BOTOX® is administered by small injections into the upper area of eyelids and brow. It will give temporary relief of eye lid spasms, or furrowing eye brows. The success rate of BOTOX® is 90%, while lasting any where from 12-16 weeks. The side effects of BOTOX® are well tolerated. In general, eyelid drooping and corneal irritation are the most common side effects and only lasts 1-2 weeks. Double vision rarely occurs and resolves after a few weeks.
